Here’s when you have to start paying overtime rates

 
You must pay your employee at least one and a half times his wage for the overtime he works.
 
Overtime starts as soon as your employee works more than his ordinary or normal hours for any day or week, say the experts behind Your Essential Guide to Overtime: Everything You Didn’t Know About Overtime.
 
They go on to say that in terms of the BCEA, you can ask your employee to work up to 45 ordinary hours a week.
You can also only expect nine ordinary hours a day if your employee works a five-day week. If he works more than five days a week, he can only work eight ordinary hours a day.

 
Don’t forget this important point when it comes to overtime rates

 
Despite what the BCEA says, if your employment contract or policies allow for shorter ordinary working hours, fewer working hours per day or add up to less than 45 per week. Your employee has worked what you’ve said are his ordinary hours. If he works over these hours, he starts working overtime. And you have to start paying overtime rates.
